Tlos Ancient City, Seydikemer - Historical Places
The ancient city of Tlos, located within the boundaries of Yaka Neighborhood of Seydikemer, is on the Unesco World Heritage Temporary List and is one of the oldest settlements in the geography known as the Lycian Region. The acropolis at the entrance of the ancient city, which was recorded as Dlawa in the 14th century BC Hittite documents and Tlawa in the Lycian inscriptions, affects the viewers with its view of nature.
The surroundings of the naturally sheltered acropolis hill, with its steep slopes about 500 meters high, were reinforced in part by the city walls. While going to Tlos castle, temple tombs carved into the rocks on the slope attract attention. The most magnificent of these tombs is the tomb monument of Bellerephontes, where the winged horse Pegasus was depicted while fighting the three-headed monster Chimera. Two columns at the entrance, the wall with three sections, the door adorned with ornaments in the middle, the doors leading to the tomb room on both sides further increase the interest in the structure. At the foot of the acropolis are several rows of seats, stadium, bath, theater and church ruins. There are ruins of Lykia (Lycian) walls in the plain below the castle, nine meters wide. The walls of the Roman Period can be seen to the south of the city agora, whose six-arched door is still standing. The important structure of Tlos is its theater. However, the stadium is also of great importance. Tlos is also known as the sports city of Lycia.
Tlos is the shining star of the region in terms of archaeological, cultural, religious and economic aspects. It carries the traces of the settlement that continued without interruption from the Neolithic period to the Iron Age. In fact, in the written sources of the Hittites, (Anal, Annual) Tlos is mentioned as a country. Tlos, which is an important center in terms of the history of Christianity, is one of the most important episcopal centers of Lycia. This religious significance continued until the 12th century. It also carries traces of the Ottoman Period. In the 18th century, Tlos was the intersection of the trade routes of the region.
